Did You Know?
When Gordon Murray designed the McLaren F1, he faced a unique challenge: the BMW V12 engine generated so much heat it threatened to melt the carbon-fibre bodywork. His solution was to line the engine bay with 16 grams of pure 24-carat gold foil. Gold is the ultimate heat reflector, ensuring the car stayed cool at 240mph. Myth busting, the F1 uses a BMW V12 of the S70 family. This was modified by Paul Rosche specifically for Gordon Murray and is not directly the same engine featured in the BMW 850CSi.
